Sun Joe SWJ800E Pole Saw Review

#1. Technical Feature

Power

At the heart of the Sun Joe SWJ800E lies a fairly modest 6.5 Amps inductive motor. Now, this is not the most powerful electric motor we saw in a pole saw. However, this does not mean that this model is underpowered. In fact, it does the job quite well as long as it is used on lumber that is no more than 7/5-inch in diameter. Indeed, the Sun Joe pole saw is made more for casual and general purpose use for hard to reach branches of small diameter, rather than a heavy duty pole saw for professional work.

As long as you use this model on the recommended branch size, it should do a decent job.

Guide Bar/Handle

Sun Joe SWJ800E comes with a high-quality Oregon chain bar that is known for its exceptional durability and long lifetime. Indeed, we were quite amazed to see such a quality chain bar in what will classify as a budget pole saw.

Its chain and bar measure a decent 8-inch in length, making this pole saw suitable for cutting lumber of up to 16-inch in diameter. This is quite generous and should be more than sufficient for any type of general-purpose cutting, and not restricted to only pole saw applications like pruning or trimming branches.

The pole bar itself measures 8.7 feet, but it is also telescopic which means that you have a maximum reach of 15 feet. This is more than enough for any gardening, arborist work and trimming on tall and hard to reach branches. Furthermore, adjusting the length is exceptionally easy in this electric pole saw as all that is required, is a twist and lock system. This locking mechanism is extremely easy-to-use and even absolute beginners, people who have never used a pole saw before in their life will find it extremely easy to use.

#2. User-friendly

Since this is an electric pole saw there is no delay between starting the device. Plug this pole saw to an electrical socket and press on the power button located in a very convenient and intuitive position. That's it to start this device. Very easy!

Furthermore, the handle is a closed system which means that it wraps around your hand for maximum comfort and security. You can cut hard material like knots and nodes with this pole saw without the risk of it leaving your hand.

There is no extra coating on the handle for more comfort, but customers who have used this product have not complained one bit about discomfort using this pole saw, even when used for an extended period. However, despite the lack of a comfortable buffer material, the handle still has an ergonomic form factor. This should drastically help limit hand fatigue.

Lastly, as with the most electric pole chainsaws, Sun Joe SWJ800E is not very loud, unlike a similarly powered gas pole saw. This is a very big advantage, especially if you work at a client site where the noise might annoy the neighbors.

#3. Safety

To sweeten the deal, the Oregon chain bar in this pole saw has been designed in a way to limit kickback. This makes it much more secure to use, even by those who have never manipulated a pole saw before in their life.

#4. Other Features

  • Auto-Lubrication – The topside of this pole saw has an oil compartment for automatic lubrication of the chain and bar. This makes cutting through branches more efficient and easy.
  • Chain Removal – The chain in this pole saw can also be removed quickly in a matter of seconds due to a special design used on the chain bar. Alternatively, you can also tension the chain as easily.

#5. Price

The biggest advantage of these Sun Joe pole saw lies in its pricing. Indeed, it is more affordable than most quality pole saws available on the market saw. It ain't the most powerful pole saw but based on a price to performance ratio; it is nearly impossible to get a better pole saw for the money than the Sun Joe SWJ800E.

#6. Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Affordable – This pole saw will not cost an arm and a leg.
  • Less noisy – As most electric pole saw, this model does not produce a lot of noise making it very convenient to use at a client’s site.
  • Auto lubrication system with oil compartment at the top.
  • Requires little maintenance.

Cons

  • Underpowered for heavy-duty applications. Will have difficulty cutting through thick and tough branches.
  • The chain bar can be removed from the pole but lacks a handle and hand guard for use as a chainsaw.

#7. Who Should Buy?

This model from Sun Joe is not the most ergonomic or powerful pole saw we have ever reviewed. However, there are still a few good things going for it. It is affordably priced, and as long as it is used for trimming branches of less than 7.5-inch in diameter, it should be a solid performer. It also has a very decent maximum reach of 15 feet, which is overkill for most users Just do not expect to use this electric pole saw for heavy duty applications or as a chainsaw substitute. Overall, for homeowners, it is a decent purchase at a very affordable price. It is value for money, and we can safely recommend it.
