DeWalt DCD771C2 Review

#1. Technical Features

Battery

Dewalt DCD771C2

The DCD771C2 sports a 20V lithium ion battery that is powerful enough to deliver 300 unit watts (UWO) of power. It is not the most powerful drill driver battery we know of, like the DeWalt DCD780 with its 350 unit watts, but it is still more than enough power for average use. Furthermore, the battery in this model is heavy duty so it can easily cope with long periods of usage. One of the best things of the DCD771C2 is that it comes with 2 batteries for more convenience to the user.

Trigger/Speed

This model contains a variable speed control to allow you to drill on different materials. It has a 2-speed setting that turns the spindle anywhere from 0 - 450 RPM to 0 - 1,500 RPM. Of course, the speed is not as fast as the excellent DeWalt DCD780, but still decent. Sometimes you will need a lower speed why are there is a higher one. You can easily switch between a low speed and a high one using the clutch setting in this model. The speed button is conveniently positioned in this drill driver, and you will not have to leave your hand from the handle to adjust the speed. Instead, you can use your other hand to do so. Very handy and practical indeed.

Chuck

The chuck of the DCD771C2 is a standard 1/2 inch. This means that you will have no problem finding drill bits for this drill driver. Additionally, the main benefit of the 1/2 inch shank drill bit is that it is cheap and are designed for drilling metal, wood and concrete.

Additionally, this is a keyless sleeve ratcheting clutch system such that it has a tight grip on your drill bit diminishing vibrations and boosting performance. Furthermore, this particular system allows you to quickly and easily change drill bits in a matter of seconds. Even absolute beginners can use this chuck system to replace drill bits quickly and easily.

#2. User-Friendliness

The DCD771C2 is not the lightest drill driver we know of, at 3.6 lbs. However, it has an excellent ergonomic form factor and superb handling. This is mostly due to the very soft and comfortable handle. You can use this drill driver for hours without feeling any hand fatigue at all. It is also compact and lightweight, allowing you to work in small and tight areas easily. This is a practical feature, especially when doing cabinet work where there is only a small room to work. All in all, this model handles very well, and due to the tall but compact form factor of this drill driver, it has an excellent handling.

#3. Other Feature

  • Rapid Charger: The charger in this model will quickly recharge the 20V lithium-ion battery in less than an hour. Additionally, the battery itself can contain a charge for many weeks without draining. This is very helpful if you do not use your drill driver every day.
  • LED Light: This model comes with a LED light system that automatically switches on the moment you press the trigger button. It will help illuminate dark areas so that you can have better visibility on your drilling. Furthermore, the LED light in this model has a small delay which will keep the light on for a few seconds. A handy feature if you want to illuminate an area as this model easily retrofits as a small torch as well.

#4. What's in the Box

Out of the box, you get a contractor bag, a compact charger, the DeWalt DCD771C2 drill driver itself as well as 2 20V lithium-ion batteries. We appreciate the fact that DeWalt ships this model with a spare battery as this is extremely convenient. You will not get drill bits with this purchase and will need to buy your own. But do not worry, those are usually not very expensive, and you can get them at your local hardware store.

#5. Price

The price is the most interesting aspect of the DeWalt DCD771C2. It is not the cheapest driver we have reviewed. But, it is also not as expensive as the DeWalt DCD780. However, we think that you get a lot for your money with this purchase, even if it is not as performing as the more premium DeWalt DCD780. On the bright side, DeWalt includes an additional battery at no extra cost which makes this an even better deal. To be fair, we do not know any other deals in this price range that includes an additional battery. All in all, we think that the pricing of this drill driver is very reasonable and will not break the bank.

#6. Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Value for money
  • Small and compact. Can be used to drill in tight areas
  • 2-speed variable speed of 0 - 450 RPM and 0 - 1,500 RPM
  • Fast charger can fully recharge the battery in less than an hour
  • Spare battery included.

Cons

  • Not the best drill driver for heavy-duty drilling in tough material like metal.

Who Should Buy?

This particular model from DeWalt has sufficient power to be used as a jobsite drill driver. Changing drill bits can be done in a matter of seconds with the keyless ratcheting sleeve chuck. Therefore, we recommend the DCD771C2 to homeowners who need a lightweight, ergonomic and fairly affordable drill driver. Additionally, contractors can go ahead and buy this model as long as they are not drilling on concrete. The spare battery delivered with this purchase is very convenient. It will drastically help diminish your recharge time. Something that professionals on a schedule will appreciate.
