Many of their models have pioneered the chainsaw industry, by introducing new and revolutionary technologies that have changed the way professionals work with a chainsaw. Technologies like an auto-chain brake when the user's finger leaves the power button have been a standard feature in their models, even during the early days of cordless chainsaws.

Additionally, this is a brand known for their innovation in making efficient and silent motors called DigiPro technology. Many of their chainsaw models allow you to do more with less energy consumption. This has enabled their cordless chainsaws to be absolute beasts with little to no competition. Indeed, this is a brand that knows how to build a quality chainsaw. But most of all, this is a company that knows how to price them! 3 Best GreenWorks Chainsaws - Reviews

#1. GreenWorks Pro GCS80420 18-Inch Cordless Chainsaw

Editor's Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

GreenWorks Pro GCS80420 18-Inch Cordless Chainsaw

First, we have the GreenWorks Pro GCS80420. This model is one of the best and most high-end models in the GreenWorks line of products. It is used by many experts and professional woodworkers for a wide range of applications. The GreenWorks Pro GCS80420 80V is a cordless chainsaw, but that does not mean it lacks power. Far from it.

In fact, power is the main advantage of this chainsaw. Under the hood of the GCS80420, we find a heavy-duty 80 Volts 2 AH lithium-ion battery that is sufficient to cut through any type of material of any dimension with great ease. It will not stall or lock on you, as is commonly a problem with lower performing chainsaws when cutting thick and dense lumber.

With this GreenWorks 80 Volts chainsaw, you have the option to purchase 3 variants – one with the battery and charger. Another with the battery and charger, along with a GreenWorks lawnmower and the third, a vanilla model without the battery or charger at a significant saving. The battery is heavy-duty and long-lasting, allowing you to make up to 150 cuts on 4 x 4 inches lumber with a single fully charged battery. The best feature of this GreenWorks 80 Volts battery is definitely the recharge time. It can fully be recharged in 30 minutes or less – allowing you to cut more lumber with less wasted time to recharges.

Further, the motor in this model has been designed for maximum efficiency. It contains the legendary DigiPro brushless motor that is both energy efficient and heavy-duty. Moreover, this motor is known to deliver the performance of an equivalent 45 cc gas-powered chainsaw, which is very powerful. You get a lot of performance from this GreenWorks 80 Volts chainsaw. Best of all, you power on this unit by simply pushing the power button located a finger away from the handle. You do not have to wait or yank multiple times to get this unit started. It will power on anytime you push the power switch. People who have used gas-powered chainsaws will know just how helpful and practical this feature is.

Additionally, the bar measures 18-inch which make it very versatile. Effectively, it allows you to cut material of up to 36-inch in diameter, which is overkill for most. It’s just nice to know that this GreenWorks 80 Volts chainsaw can over-deliver, if necessary. The front has steel buckling spikes for security and ease of use. You can use it to push on the material and help guide material away from the user. Additionally, this model has a strong metal hand guard that protects the user’s hand at all time. It is very tough and provides robust protection.

Pros

  • High-performance battery and brushless DigiPro motor for heavy-duty cutting. Will not stall or choke and power is equivalent to a 45 cc gas-powered chainsaw.
  • Long bar length of 18-inch allows you to cut material of up to 36-inch in diameter
  • Smooth and low-noise operation. Does not output toxic fumes
  • 2 AH battery charger fully charges the battery in 30 minutes

Cons

  • The price. It is an expensive model

Expert Reviews

YouTube channel “Tools In Action” made an excellent demonstration of the GreenWorks Pro GCS80420 80 Volts. We can easily see how powerful and heavy-duty this chainsaw is. He used this unit to cut over a dozen 6-inch to 18-inch logs in a matter of minutes. But it does not stop there. Pay close attention to the sound as well. Indeed, despite having so much power, it is also relatively a low-noise chainsaw. They then proceed to review this product, covering its various features. Finally, the reviewer is also very specific about how this model is as powerful as a gas-powered chainsaw, minus the disadvantages. Not a shocker at all, they end up recommending it!

Who Should Buy?

If you are looking for a heavy-duty and cordless chainsaw, it is hard to beat the GreenWorks Pro GCS80420 80 Volt. It has exceptional power and a bar long enough to cut up to 36-inch of lumber with great ease. Due to the price, we recommend it to semi-professionals and professionals who make a living cutting trees and large pieces of lumber. It is a very reliable and performing chainsaw for the money.

#2. GreenWorks 20312 Cordless Chainsaw

Editor's Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

GreenWorks 20312 Cordless Chainsaw

This GreenWorks 40 Volts chainsaw is a little bit more modest than the model reviewed above. But it does not lack features or performance. Indeed, this cordless chainsaw has a 40-Volt battery that has been specially designed to deliver up to 30% more torque than previous, or competing models. As with all GreenWorks chainsaws, it comes equipped with the DigiPro motor technology that allows you to cut up to 100 4 x 4 inches pieces in one full charge. Significantly less than the GreenWorks 80 Volts model reviewed above, but not an under-performer by any means.

Additionally, it also delivers up to 70% fewer vibrations for more comfort and better usability. You have the option to buy this model with 4 AH 40 Volts battery and charger, or get a vanilla model without both the battery and charger for some additional savings. When used with a 2 AH battery, you can expect to charge this unit in an hour or so fully. With a 4 AH battery, it will take around 2 hours. Again, this is a far cry from the 30 minutes recharge time of the GreenWorks Pro GCS80420 80 Volts, but still fairly decent.

The Oregon chain bar is a heavy-duty bar that will not bend or break under load. It measures a full 16-inch, which allows you to work with material of up to 32-inch, which is plenty for the average Joe or Jane. Moreover, this GreenWorks 40 Volt chainsaw comes with a metal front guard for protection, as well as has low-kickbacks that can cause an injury. Indeed, it is a much safer chainsaw than others, offered at an attractive price. What we like about the Greenworks 20312 is that the battery is compatible with other GreenWorks devices like its lawnmowers or even other GreenWorks chainsaws. Since you have the option to get this model without the battery and charger at a discounted price, we highly appreciate the effort of GreenWorks to help the user get the most out of their money.

Pros

  • Value for money with an excellent price-to-performance ratio
  • Low kickback with an automatic chain brake. Safer to use, especially by beginners
  • Technologies inside deliver up to 70% fewer vibrations and 30% more motor efficiency

Cons

  • Delivers fewer cuts (100) on a full charge. Less than the GreenWorks 80 Volt chainsaw

Expert Reviews

ApplianceTools reviewed this GreenWorks 40 Volts chainsaw on his channel a few years back. He gives a hands-on demonstration of the GreenWorks 20312 in action, and in his own words “he never saw anything like it”. His cuts are clean and smooth, and he simply could not believe this model was battery-powered.

As most people who used the GreenWorks 20312, he was shocked at the performance of this small and yet performing chainsaw. Note that the reviewer has been using chainsaws for the past 7 years, so this GreenWorks 40 Volts need to have some magic inside to impress him. If we watch the video, we can see just how powerful the GreenWorks 20312 is.

Who Should Buy?

We recommend this GreenWorks 40 Volts chainsaw as a cost-effective solution for landowners, beginners and semi-professionals who need a performing and yet easy-to-use chainsaw for their everyday need.

#3. GreenWorks 20262 Cordless Chainsaw

Editor's Rating: 4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

GreenWorks 20262 Cordless Chainsaw

Finally, we have the GreenWorks 20262 chainsaw. This is the most modest GreenWorks 40 Volts chainsaw in this review, but again, it is still a great performer. It comes with 40 Volts 2 AH battery, similar to the GreenWorks 20312 but with a smaller bar of 12-inch. This makes this GreenWorks 40 Volts chainsaw a solid performer when it comes to lumber smaller than 24-inch in diameter.

Again, you have the option to buy either the combo kit that comes with the battery and charger or a base model with only the GreenWorks 40 Volts unit. Note that this battery is cross compatible with all GreenWorks power tools, including the chainsaw models already reviewed. Neat! This allows you to get a more affordable model like a GreenWorks 40 Volts as a starter chainsaw, and then upgrade to a more performing model like a GreenWorks 80 Volts down the line without purchasing the battery pack and charger, for no additional cost. See? That’s why we love GreenWorks!

The bar is still an Oregon make for durability and strength. Moreover, this model has a tool-less chain tensioning system (as all GreenWorks models in this review) that allows you to tension the chain in a matter of seconds. Bear in mind that it is not automatic. What is automatic, on the other hand, is the oiling system. It automatically lubricates the chains for you, allowing you to cut material more efficiently and more easily.

Lastly, the 20262 is a top-handle chainsaw, which means that you hold it from the top rather than the side. This is a proven ergonomic design that allows you to work longer with your chainsaw without hand fatigue. The handle is also coated with a soft and comfortable rubber material, making it a pleasure to hold in hand.

Pros

  • DigiPro brushless motor for 30% more efficiency and power compared to other brands
  • Relatively silent. Also lightweight at only 6 lbs. Very maneuverable
  • Handle top design with a large ergonomic and comfortable handle. Will not cause hand fatigue

Cons

  • The bar is only 12-inch. Cannot be used to cut logs bigger than 24-inch

Who Should Buy?

The GreenWorks 20262 is the cheapest GreenWorks chainsaw in this review. This does not mean that is an under-performer, or “affordable”. It is still a premium grade GreenWorks chainsaw, after all. But still, it is well worth it because they are heavy-duty chainsaws and last a long time. We recommend this model to those who do not need to cut lumber of more than 24-inch in diameter and still need a performing, dependable, and heavy-duty chainsaw.

Conclusion

As we have seen, the GreenWorks chainsaws are truly breath-taking pieces of machinery. There is a reason why tradesman like this brand so much. That’s because their power tools simply work! Indeed, all the chainsaws in this GreenWorks review pack a serious punch and are durable chainsaws, that can be used anywhere anytime – whether it is for casual use or heavy-duty applications. If you have still not picked your favorite GreenWorks chainsaw just yet, we recommend that you go through this review one more time. Any of those GreenWorks 80 Volts or 40 Volts chainsaws will make a good fit for your workshop, and they will serve you well for years to come. For those who need maximum power, go with the GreenWorks 80 Volts chainsaw. For anyone else, the GreenWorks 40 Volts is plenty!
